Reply to Instagram DMs faster: 2026 rules for solo owners
Instagram gives any app 24 hours to answer a DM. BetterSocials can reply in about a minute, from $29 a month for four accounts. Meta's free tools help too.

To reply to Instagram DMs faster without hiring, let software write the routine answers and keep yourself on anything it can't answer from your own facts. BetterSocials is our pick for local businesses and creators whose DMs bring in customers. On its Reply in my voice setting, a DM gets an answer about a minute after it arrives, and plans start at $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts.
Meta Business Suite is the free option for template replies, and ManyChat suits keyword flows that also run on WhatsApp and TikTok.
All three work inside the same Instagram rules, and those rules set how fast any reply can go out.
The Instagram limits that decide reply speed
Instagram sets the clock for every tool that answers DMs through Meta's API. We read each rule below in Meta's developer docs and Instagram's help center between July and October 2026, and kept the ones that matter most to a business that answers alone.
| Rule | Limit | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| App reply window | 24 hours after their last message | Every tool on Meta's API |
| DM reply to a comment | One message within 7 days | Comment-to-DM tools |
| Private reply rate | 750 calls an hour | Each professional account |
| Saved replies | Mobile app only | Business and creator accounts |
| FAQ questions | Up to four | Your Instagram inbox |
| Keyword triggers | Up to 5 words or phrases | Meta Business Suite automations |
For a solo owner, the 24-hour window is the one to watch. Say a buyer writes at 9pm and hears nothing by 9pm the next day. No app on Meta's API can answer them until they write again.
Which free Instagram and Meta tools cut typing time
Instagram's saved replies are the first free tool, and they live on your phone. Meta's help center says the feature "is only available for Instagram business and creator accounts on the Instagram mobile app." To make one, you "hold down a message you've sent, tap More and then tap Save," then pick a keyboard shortcut.
Instagram's FAQ feature lets you "add up to four frequently asked questions" that people tap before they write. A tapped question goes "to your Requests in Chats," and you have to accept that request before you can reply, according to the Instagram Help Center.
On desktop, Meta Business Suite adds free automations under Inbox, then Automations. They cover instant replies, away messages, FAQ templates and keyword replies that fire on up to five words or phrases. Its keyword automations reply with a template you write or with Meta Business Agent, after a 15-minute wait unless you reply first.
Instagram also has AI auto replies through a creator AI, though Meta says that feature "is being gradually introduced and may not be available to you yet," and it needs a creator AI built in Meta AI Studio.
Set these up first. They're free, and they answer the questions you predicted in words you wrote ahead of time.
Can AI answer Instagram DMs before the window closes?
Yes, BetterSocials answers Instagram, Facebook and TikTok DMs with AI replies written in the owner's voice. The DMs section sits in Settings, then AI voice, with three settings: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice.
- Draft for me puts a draft in your voice on every new DM the moment it arrives, and nothing sends until you approve it.
- Reply in my voice answers a DM about a minute after it arrives.
- Questions wait in Needs reply for your approval unless you turn on Answer questions too, which only switches on once you've written at least one AI rule.
AI rules are plain sentences you write, such as your prices, hours and booking link. When your rules don't cover what someone asked, the AI doesn't guess. The DM waits for you in Needs reply.
After five AI replies in one conversation in a day, the rest wait for you too.
BetterSocials builds the voice profile from replies you've already written. Each AI reply uses one AI credit, Creator includes 1,000 a month, and when credits run out the AI pauses instead of charging more.
InstantDM puts AI on DMs too: some of its paid plans include an AI agent that runs on your own OpenAI, Claude, Gemini or DeepSeek key. BetterSocials adds the voice profile, your rules and the Needs reply hold, in one Inbox with your comments.
What ManyChat's keyword flows cost at 4,000 contacts
ManyChat runs keyword flows on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok, and it bills by active contacts. Every price in this report is what the vendor's own page listed in October 2026. ManyChat's paid plans start at $17 a month, or $14 billed yearly, and Pro is $39 a month with 2,500 active contacts. Each contact past the limit costs $0.10 on Essential, $0.05 on Pro and $0.025 on Business, billed monthly.
A ManyChat Pro account that reaches 4,000 people in a month pays $39 plus $0.05 for each of the 1,500 contacts past the limit, a bill of $114 ($39 + 1,500 x $0.05 = $114). A BetterSocials Creator account pays $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts with unlimited contacts.
ManyChat is cheaper to start, at $17 a month.
The extra money on BetterSocials buys a flat bill when a post goes viral, keyword comment-to-DM with no flow builder, and AI replies in your voice across the whole Inbox. If your business runs on WhatsApp, ManyChat covers it, and BetterSocials doesn't connect WhatsApp.
What a shared Instagram inbox costs a team of three
Meta Business Suite is the free way for a team to answer Instagram DMs from a computer. An owner can allow access to Instagram messages in Meta Business Suite on desktop, and its housekeeping automations flag unanswered messages and auto-assign conversations to admins.
Paid inboxes price by the seat or by the plan. Hootsuite includes its inbox from Standard at $99 per user a month, and Sprout Social puts its inbox on Standard at $199 per seat a month, both billed annually. BetterSocials puts twelve accounts and unlimited teammates, invited by email from Settings, then Team, on one Team plan. That plan is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly.
For three people answering DMs at the yearly rates above, Hootsuite bills three times $99 a month and Sprout Social three times $199.
| Tool | Plan | Price | Three people |
|---|---|---|---|
| BetterSocials | Team | $79 a month | 1 flat plan |
| Meta Business Suite | Free | $0 a month | 1 free account |
| Hootsuite | Standard | $99 per user a month | 3 paid users |
| Sprout Social | Standard | $199 per seat a month | 3 paid seats |
Meta Business Suite is cheaper than all three paid options. On BetterSocials the money buys AI drafts in the owner's voice, a tag on every DM as it arrives with buyers marked Lead, and comments from other platforms in the same Inbox. BetterSocials Creator and Pro are one login each, so a solo owner doesn't need Team.
Where a buyer's DM can slip past you
Instagram splits a business account's DMs into folders, and a buyer's message can sit in the wrong one. Meta's help center says the inbox "has 3 folders: Primary, General and Requests," and a tapped FAQ question waits in Requests until you accept it. Requests with no activity for 30 days stop being returned in API calls, so a tool can lose sight of them.
The other direction can trip you up too. Meta's private replies documentation says a DM sent from a comment reaches a non-follower's "Request folder," so a public reply under the comment tells them where to look. BetterSocials pairs each keyword DM on Instagram and Facebook with a public reply under the comment.
BetterSocials lands Instagram story replies, story mentions, voice messages, photos and shared posts in its Inbox as DMs, with a plain line such as "Replied to your story." Story replies and voice notes get no AI reply, so those wait for you. Every new DM gets a tag as it arrives: Lead for questions about price, booking or availability, or Spam, Support, Comment to DM or Archived.
Lead detection costs nothing. It's on by default. A new lead sends a push notification to the owner's phone, and unanswered leads get at most one reminder email a day.
What you can still send after 24 hours
Instagram lets an app send a DM only within 24 hours of the person's last message, and every new message from them restarts the clock. Meta's policy closes the usual detours: "One-time notifications are not available for IG Messaging API," and "Sponsored messages are not available for IG Messaging API."
Meta also allows replies typed by a person up to 7 days after the last message, but only through apps it has approved for that feature. Automated messages never qualify.
The Instagram app itself has no window. Open the person's profile, tap Message and send it yourself. BetterSocials copies your typed reply when you click Open on Instagram, so you can paste it in.
Answer within minutes and the window rarely comes up at all.
Where BetterSocials fits for an owner with no staff
BetterSocials is best for local businesses, creators and small agencies whose comments and DMs bring in customers, and who answer them without staff. It's an AI social media manager: one Inbox for Instagram and Facebook comments and DMs, TikTok comments and DMs, YouTube comments, and Threads and LinkedIn Company Page comments, plus keyword comment-to-DM and posting.
- Creator: $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for 4 social accounts, 1 login and 1,000 AI credits a month.
- Pro: $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for 6 accounts, 1 login and 2,000 AI credits a month.
- Team: $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for 12 accounts, unlimited teammates and 4,000 shared AI credits a month.
Every plan has a 7-day free trial with a card required, unlimited contacts and a 30-day money-back guarantee on the first paid charge. Setup takes about ten minutes, and you connect Instagram on Instagram's own sign-in screen, so your password never touches BetterSocials. It doesn't connect WhatsApp, X, email inboxes or SMS.
FAQ
Does Instagram have saved replies for business accounts?
Yes. Business and creator accounts can save a reply and give it a keyboard shortcut, but only in the Instagram mobile app. To make one, hold down a message you've sent, tap More, then tap Save.
Can Meta Business Suite send automated responses to Instagram DMs?
Yes. Meta Business Suite has free automations on desktop for instant replies, away messages, FAQs and keyword replies. Keyword automations reply with a template you write or with Meta Business Agent, and they wait 15 minutes unless you reply first.
Does ManyChat charge per contact for Instagram DM automation?
Yes. ManyChat Pro is $39 a month for 2,500 active contacts, billed monthly, and each contact past that costs $0.05, so 4,000 people in a month runs $114. BetterSocials bills a flat plan with unlimited contacts, from $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts.
Can a team answer one Instagram account without sharing the password?
Yes. Meta Business Suite lets an owner give people access to Instagram messages on desktop. In BetterSocials, the Team plan invites unlimited teammates by email from Settings, then Team, at $99 a month or $79 billed yearly for twelve accounts.
Can Meta Business Suite assign Instagram conversations to people?
Yes. Its housekeeping automations auto-assign conversations to admins and flag messages nobody has answered. BetterSocials tags every DM as it arrives, as Lead, Support or Spam, so whoever opens the Inbox can pick out the buyers.
Why can't a tool reply to an old Instagram DM?
Instagram only lets an app send a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message, and past that Meta rejects the send from any tool, BetterSocials included. You can still answer from the Instagram app itself. Every new message from the person restarts the 24-hour clock.
