Local businesses turn Instagram comments into bookings by answering fast and putting the booking link in a DM. For a salon, med spa, gym or restaurant, our pick is BetterSocials, an AI social media manager that sends your link when someone comments a keyword and answers DMs in your voice, from $29 a month for four accounts. Meta Business Suite runs keyword templates for free, and ManyChat suits multi-step DM flows.
How we built this how-to, and why BetterSocials goes first
For a local business, a comment such as "how much?" under a Reel is a search typed into Instagram, and your reply is the result.
BetterSocials runs all three steps below in one app. The other tools come in where each one does a single job well.
The platform rules come from Meta's developer and help pages, read in October 2026, and prices come from each vendor's listed plans, read between July and October 2026. The sample is four kinds of local business: med spas, salons, gyms and restaurants.
Three steps from a keyword comment to a booked appointment
Comment-to-DM is the basic chain BetterSocials, Meta Business Suite and ManyChat all run: a keyword in a comment sends the commenter a direct message. The full rule set sits in our report Comment-to-DM rules in 2026: how Instagram and Facebook commenters reach your website.
1. Ask for one keyword in the caption
Tell people to comment one word, such as BOOK, under a Reel or post. Capitals don't matter on BetterSocials. On Meta Business Suite, "keywords are case-sensitive, and an automated message will not be sent unless the keywords match exactly," per Meta's keyword automation help page.
2. Send the booking link by DM, and reply in public
On Instagram and Facebook, the keyword triggers a private reply, which is Meta's name for a DM sent in answer to a comment. Meta's private replies documentation sets the limit: "Only one message can be sent to the Instagram user who commented. The message must be sent within 7 days from when the comment was created."
The same page says the DM goes to the inbox of people who follow you and to the Request folder of people who don't. A public reply under the comment, something like "Sent, check your DMs," tells non-followers where to look. BetterSocials pairs every keyword DM on Instagram and Facebook with that public reply.
3. Answer the follow-up questions from your own facts
Then the commenter asks something no template predicted. A price, an opening, a detail.
In BetterSocials, you write AI rules, plain sentences with your prices, hours and booking link, and with Answer questions too on, AI replies answer DM questions from them about a minute after they arrive.
Speed matters because of the 24-hour window. Instagram only lets a business reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message; past it, BetterSocials and most other tools can't send a DM, though you can still answer in the Instagram app.
To measure the chain, count clicks on the booking link per post, not DMs sent. BetterSocials' tracked links, in beta, show which comment or DM led to each click.
Setting it up for a med spa or salon
For a med spa or salon, BetterSocials answers price and availability questions only from the AI rules you write. Questions wait in Needs reply until you switch on Answer questions too in Settings, then AI voice. That switch only turns on once you've written at least one AI rule, so the AI answers from your facts.
If you'd rather not quote prices in DMs, write the rule that way: "never quote prices, send people to the booking link." When someone asks something your rules don't cover, the AI doesn't guess. The DM waits for you.
Every new comment or DM that asks about price, booking or availability gets a Lead tag, and a new lead sends a push notification to your phone. Story replies and voice messages land in the Inbox as DMs with a plain line such as "Replied to your story," and they get no AI reply, so they wait for you.
Meta Business Suite is the better fit for a salon whose questions are predictable, because its free Automations menu has templates for FAQs, hours, location and contact information.
Setting it up for a gym or fitness studio
A gym has two jobs on Instagram, and BetterSocials covers both: a trial-class keyword on Reels, and replies to the comments and DMs that follow. Put a keyword such as TRIAL in a class Reel's caption, and each comment with it gets the trial link by DM.
On the Reply in my voice setting, BetterSocials answers everyday comments, such as compliments, 1 to 5 minutes later, and a DM about a minute after it arrives. After five AI replies in one conversation in a day, the rest wait for you, so a long membership conversation reaches a person.
A studio with several staff answering needs Team, at $99 a month, or $79 a month billed yearly, for 12 accounts and unlimited teammates.
Agorapulse is the better fit for a staff team that splits the inbox. Its pricing page lists assigning comments and messages, saved replies and AI reply suggestions in its inbox, and it was $79 per user a month on annual billing as of July 2026. Three users pay three times that each month on annual billing.
Setting it up for a restaurant
BetterSocials puts Instagram DMs, Facebook Messenger messages and the comments from both in one inbox. Write your hours, menu link and reservation link as AI rules, plus lines like "mention we are closed Mondays." The reply filter keeps links you write into your AI rules, such as a menu or booking link.
Buffer is cheaper for a restaurant that only answers comments. Buffer's Community inbox covers comments on your posts, and Instagram and Facebook DMs stay in the phone app. Six channels on Buffer Essentials are $30 a month on annual billing, which works out to $30 / 6 = $5 a channel.
What the difference buys on BetterSocials is the DM side of the inbox, AI replies and keyword comment-to-DM.
A restaurant group with a manager at each location fits Hootsuite or Sprout Social, which price their inboxes per seat for teams. Hootsuite's inbox starts on Standard at $99 per user a month and Sprout Social's at $199 per seat a month, both billed annually.
When Meta Business Suite or ManyChat is enough
Meta Business Suite is enough when your questions are predictable and one fixed template answers them. Meta's help center says "Meta Business Suite is free to use on desktop and in the Meta Business Suite mobile app," and its inbox holds messages and comments from your Facebook Page, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp Business.
The limits sit in the automations. "Keyword automations are only available in Meta Business Suite on desktop," each one holds up to five keywords, and "Inbox will automatically send a keyword automation to a message after 15 minutes unless you personally respond before then."
ManyChat is enough when you need WhatsApp or a multi-step sequence built in its flow builder. ManyChat works on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok, and it bills by active contacts. Pro is $39 a month with 2,500 active contacts, and each extra contact costs $0.05, billed monthly.
So a Pro account that reaches 4,000 people in a month has 1,500 contacts past 2,500 and pays $39 + 1,500 x $0.05 = $114. BetterSocials bills nothing per contact, so the Creator bill stays flat whatever the count. BetterSocials doesn't connect WhatsApp, so bookings that arrive there stay with Meta Business Suite or ManyChat.
What a single location pays per month in 2026
At $29 a month for four accounts, BetterSocials Creator sets the line in this table. Meta Business Suite costs less, and Buffer costs less per channel.
| Tool | Price | Billing | Covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| BetterSocials Creator | $29 a month, 4 accounts | Monthly, or $24 yearly | Comments, DMs, keyword DMs, AI replies |
| BetterSocials Pro | $49 a month, 6 accounts | Monthly, or $39 yearly | Creator features plus analytics |
| Meta Business Suite | Free | No bill | Messages, comments, template automations |
| Buffer Essentials | $30 a month, 6 channels | Yearly | Comments only |
| Later Growth | $37.50 a month | Yearly, or $50 monthly | Instagram and Facebook DMs and comments |
| ManyChat Pro | $39 a month, 2,500 contacts | Extra contacts $0.05, billed monthly | DM automation and flows |
| Agorapulse | $79 per user a month | Yearly | Team inbox with scheduling |
| Vista Social Professional | $99 a month, 2 users | Monthly, or $80 yearly | Inbox plus DM automations |
| Hootsuite Standard | $99 per user a month | Yearly | Team inbox |
| Sprout Social Standard | $199 per seat a month | Yearly | Team inbox |
The extra on BetterSocials buys the DM side, AI replies in your voice and keyword DMs with no contact meter. Against Later Growth, ManyChat Pro and the per-seat team inboxes, BetterSocials Creator costs less each month.
Who BetterSocials suits, and where to start
For a local business whose comments and DMs bring in customers, BetterSocials gives you one inbox that answers them in the owner's voice. Creator, at $29 a month or $24 billed yearly, covers four accounts and one login.
Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts and analytics. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for 12 accounts and unlimited teammates.
Each AI reply uses one AI credit, from 1,000 a month on Creator to 4,000 shared on Team, and the AI pauses when they run out instead of charging more. Every plan has a 7-day free trial, card required, and a 30-day money-back guarantee on the first paid charge. To start, open the pricing page on bettersocials.ai, or read its comment-to-DM feature page to see how it works.
FAQ
Does Meta Business Suite automate Instagram comment-to-DM for free?
Yes. Meta Business Suite includes a free comment-to-message automation, set up on desktop, that sends a template you write. Keywords are case-sensitive, and Meta's help page says keyword automations send after 15 minutes unless you reply first.
How much does ManyChat cost for Instagram DM automation?
ManyChat Pro is $39 a month with 2,500 active contacts, and each extra contact costs $0.05, billed monthly. A Pro account that reaches 4,000 people in a month pays $114. BetterSocials bills no contacts, and Creator is $29 a month for four accounts.
Can AI answer Instagram DMs about prices and booking?
Yes. In BetterSocials, you write your prices, hours and booking link as AI rules, and with Answer questions too on, AI replies answer DM questions from them in your voice about a minute after they arrive. When your rules don't cover what someone asked, the DM waits for you in Needs reply.
Can a comment-to-DM tool send my booking link?
Yes, on Instagram and Facebook. A keyword in a comment sends the person a DM with your link, and BetterSocials adds a public reply under the comment. Instagram allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment. On TikTok and YouTube, the keyword posts a public reply with the link instead.
Why didn't a customer get my automated DM?
Per Meta's developer docs, a private reply lands in the inbox if the person follows you and in their Request folder if they don't. BetterSocials pairs every keyword DM on Instagram and Facebook with a public reply under the comment, so the person knows a message is waiting.
Which inbox tool suits a restaurant group with several locations?
Hootsuite and Sprout Social suit groups with a manager at each location. Hootsuite's inbox starts on Standard at $99 per user a month and Sprout Social's at $199 per seat a month, both billed annually. BetterSocials Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for 12 accounts and unlimited teammates.
