Turn TikTok comments into leads: 2026 DM rules for business

TikTok never lets a tool start a DM, so a TikTok lead begins in the public reply. Answer with your link, invite a message, then reply within 48 hours.

To turn TikTok comments into leads, answer buying questions in public within minutes, put your link in that reply and invite the person to message you. TikTok never lets any tool start a DM, so the public reply is where a TikTok lead begins.

Our pick is BetterSocials, best for local businesses, creators and small agencies whose comments and DMs bring in customers. Later and Pallyy also bring TikTok comments into an inbox.

We read TikTok's help center and its API documentation in October 2026. The DM limits below are the TikTok rules BetterSocials states for its own TikTok connection.

Why TikTok's DM rules put the lead in the public reply

TikTok decides where a lead starts, and on TikTok it starts in the comments.

No tool can start a DM there. A comment can't fire a private DM either, outside a limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.

That rule holds for every tool on TikTok's official API. Comment-to-DM, where a keyword in a comment sends the commenter a private message with a link, works only inside that rollout.

The public reply does two jobs: it answers the question with your link, and it invites the person to message you. Once they write, a 48-hour window opens and you can reply in the DM.

Instagram runs the other way. A business gets one private reply per comment there, within 7 days of the comment being posted, so a keyword can open the DM. An Instagram comment-to-DM playbook doesn't carry over to TikTok for that reason.

Turning TikTok comments into leads, in three steps

TikTok comments turn into leads in three moves: spot the buying question, answer it in public with the link, then move the buyer into a DM they start.

1. Spot the buying comments

A buying comment asks about price, booking or availability. Hide the noise first with TikTok's Filter unwanted comments setting, which hides "recent comments that may be offensive or spam" until you approve them.

In BetterSocials, every new TikTok comment gets a tag when it arrives. The ones asking about price, booking or availability get the Lead tag, and a new lead sends a push notification to the owner's phone.

Answer the buying comment under the comment itself, and put the link in that reply. A keyword auto-reply does this for the question you hear most.

Put a word such as GUIDE in your caption. Every comment with that word then gets your public reply and your link, with no flow to build.

3. Invite a message, then answer in the DM

End the public reply with a line inviting the person to message you. When they do, you have 48 hours from their last message and up to 10 replies.

Each reply is text up to 6,000 characters or one image, never both.

Speed decides the rest. Answer within minutes and the buyer gets your link while they're still on the video. Answer the next day and they've already scrolled on.

How can you answer TikTok comments faster?

TikTok gives you its own tools to clear the queue before you reply. Filter keywords hides comments with words you add, and those comments stay "hidden unless you approve them."

Bulk delete lets you "select up to 100 comments" at a time, per TikTok's help page on managing comments. Bulk block sits in the same Manage multiple comments menu. Spam goes, and the buying questions stay on top.

A connected tool hears about new comments quickly. TikTok's comment webhook sends a notification "within five minutes of a comment or reply being created," according to TikTok's API documentation.

BetterSocials drafts replies as comments arrive, with three modes for comments under AI replies: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice. Draft for me writes each reply in your voice and waits for your approval.

Reply in my voice answers everyday comments, such as compliments and feedback, 1 to 5 minutes after they land. Questions wait in Needs reply unless you switch on Answer questions too.

That switch only turns on after you write at least one AI rule, such as your prices, hours or booking link. When your rules don't cover a question, the comment waits for you in Needs reply. With AI replies off, AI assist writes a draft in your voice when you click it.

Can a TikTok comment send someone a private DM?

No, TikTok doesn't let any tool turn a comment into a private DM, outside a limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. The rule applies to every tool that works through TikTok's API.

What a TikTok keyword can do is post a public reply with your link. In BetterSocials, a keyword on TikTok, YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages posts that public reply. On Instagram and Facebook, the same keyword sends a DM with the link as well.

Write the public reply so it works on its own: the link, one line on what it is, and an invitation to message you. The DM then starts on the buyer's side, inside TikTok's rules.

What TikTok lets a business account send in DMs

TikTok DMs from a tool are reply-only, and the limits are tight. The table lists them as BetterSocials states them for its TikTok connection.

RuleLimit
Who writes firstThe customer, always
Replies allowedUp to 10 within 48 hours
Reply formatText up to 6,000 characters or one image
Account typeTikTok Business account only
Where apps replyOutside the UK and Europe
Comment-to-DMVietnam, Thailand and Indonesia rollout only

The 48 hours count from the customer's last message. A reply can carry text or one image, never both in the same message.

BetterSocials' AI replies have a DMs section with the same Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice settings. On Reply in my voice, a TikTok DM gets an answer about a minute after it arrives. After five AI replies in one conversation in a day, the rest wait for you.

How do you see which TikTok comments turn into customers?

BetterSocials tags every new comment and DM when it arrives: Lead, Spam, Support, Comment to DM or Archived. Owners add their own tags on top. Lead detection is free and on by default.

A new lead sends a push notification to the owner's phone, and unanswered leads get at most one reminder email a day. Tracked links and a contacts list, both in beta, show which comment or DM led to a click.

Watch the clicks. A reply count tells you how busy the comments were, and a click from a named comment tells you which one brought a buyer.

TikTok also runs its own route for Business Accounts, set out in its help article on setting up lead generation from a Business Account.

Where BetterSocials fits, and what it costs

BetterSocials is an AI social media manager for local businesses, creators and small agencies, best for those whose comments and DMs bring in customers. On TikTok it puts comments and DMs in one inbox, posts public replies and keyword replies with your link, and answers DMs inside TikTok's window. It also posts and schedules TikTok videos.

BetterSocials works through the official APIs, so every limit in the table applies to it too. Later, Pallyy, Vista Social, Sprout Social and Hootsuite also read TikTok comments.

Every price here is what the vendor's own page listed in October 2026. Later's Conversations inbox starts on Growth at $37.50 a month billed yearly, or $50 monthly. Pallyy's inbox starts on Pro at $25 a month, or $20 billed yearly.

BetterSocials Creator is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, for four accounts and one login.

Pallyy's Pro plan costs less. The BetterSocials Creator plan includes TikTok DM replies, lead tags and AI replies in the owner's voice in the same inbox, with unlimited contacts.

Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates. Every plan has a 7-day free trial with a card required, and BetterSocials' pricing page lists all three.

Manychat, which works on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok, bills by active contact. Its Pro plan is $39 a month with 2,500 active contacts, and each extra contact costs $0.05, billed monthly. A Pro account that passes 2,500 contacts in a month pays $0.05 for every contact over the limit on top of the $39, where BetterSocials bills nothing per contact.

FAQ

Can Manychat send a DM when someone comments on TikTok?

No, outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. TikTok doesn't let any tool turn a comment into a private DM elsewhere, and that includes Manychat. In BetterSocials, a TikTok keyword posts a public reply with the link instead.

How many DMs can a business send on TikTok?

Up to 10 replies within 48 hours of the person's last message, and only after they write to you. TikTok never lets a tool start a DM. Each reply is text up to 6,000 characters or one image, never both.

Do I need a TikTok Business account to answer DMs from a tool?

Yes. A tool can only answer TikTok DMs for a Business account, and TikTok only lets apps answer DMs for accounts outside the UK and Europe. In BetterSocials, those DMs land in the same inbox as your TikTok comments.

How do I know which TikTok comments are leads?

In BetterSocials, a comment or DM that asks about price, booking or availability gets the Lead tag when it arrives. A new lead sends a push notification to your phone, and unanswered leads get at most one reminder email a day. Lead detection is free and on by default.

Can AI reply to TikTok comments in my voice?

Yes. BetterSocials builds a voice profile from replies you've written and drafts each TikTok comment reply to match. Draft for me waits for your approval, and Reply in my voice answers everyday comments 1 to 5 minutes after they land. Questions wait in Needs reply unless you switch on Answer questions too.

What should a TikTok keyword reply say?

The link and one line on what it is, because on TikTok the keyword reply is public. Put the keyword in your caption, such as GUIDE, and BetterSocials posts your reply with the link under each matching comment. Add a short line inviting a DM for anyone who wants help choosing.
